Anchorage Climate Zone & Energy Code
Climate Zone: IECC Climate Zone 7 (subarctic/very cold). Anchorage experiences months of sub-freezing temperatures, permafrost in some areas, high wind chill, and a short summer cooling season. Heating loads dominate the HVAC design calculation by an overwhelming margin.
Energy Code & Manual J Requirement: Alaska Building Energy Efficiency Standard (BEES), enforced alongside the Anchorage Building Code. ACCA Manual J is required for HVAC sizing. Alaska BEES has specific R-value, air sealing, and mechanical requirements that exceed many Lower-48 codes. Consult the specific AHJ for current BEES edition requirements.
