Fairbanks Climate Zone & Energy Code
Climate Zone: IECC Climate Zone 8 (subarctic). Fairbanks has the most extreme heating climate of any major US city, with heating design temperatures reaching -47°F. Permafrost, ice fog, and dramatic seasonal temperature swings are defining HVAC design considerations.
Energy Code & Manual J Requirement: Alaska Building Energy Efficiency Standard (BEES), Climate Zone 8 provisions. ACCA Manual J required for HVAC sizing. Alaska BEES Zone 8 requires exceptional envelope performance — very high R-values, triple-pane glazing, and extreme air sealing — all of which are Manual J inputs that significantly reduce calculated heating loads versus code-minimum construction.
